Begging for an HPV TestViews: 463

OK I’m starting to get a little ticked. I’m trying to get someone to test me for HPV. Tonsil and other oral cancers are beginning to be linked to the HPV virus, and since I had no other risk factors for my cancer, I’d like to know if I have this virus. Sounds like a logical request, right?

Well I am shocked but I can’t seem to get anyone to test me, damn it! I saw my ob/gyn Monday and she said, well if your pap smear comes back normal they won’t test you for HPV, they will only test if your pap comes back abnormal, otherwise the insurance won’t authorize the test.

Well OK I can see that in most situations. But I have had a cancer that is linked to that virus, so seems to me it would be logical to test me for it. My surgeon even told me that this has been discused at the hospital tumor board and they are considering automatically testing all oral cancer tumors for the HPV virus, as they have seen dramatic increases in these types of cancers among non-smokers.

I guess my next step is to see if my surgeon will go back and test a sample of my tumor. Why does it have to be this hard?

How does a non smoker become more at risk? Now that’s new one on me? I am sure if you explain to your Oncologist what happened with your OBGYN, and that you need to know if there is a link, he might just do the test. After all, aren’t we all here to learn as we go?
Good luck and keep us tuned.

I hate these insurance companies! They are just trying to save as much as money possible by not paying for important things like this. Going for a surgeon route may work, he may approve the test as medically necessity. Let us know what happens.
